THE DOGFATHER
“On “The Dogfather,” the Rhythm Dogs’ first album in seven years, the Portland band returns with an unusual blend of groove-based jazz, funk, ska, blues, Latin, and Afrobeat.”
The Dogfather (2018)
In just a few years, we’ve gone from CDs to MP3s to streaming on a network or Bluetooth, from large stereo systems to all-in-one wireless speakers, and from listening at home (or the dorm room) to listening on the go. Many of today’s kids have never owned a CD and never will. Best Buy just announced it will be discontinuing the sale of CDs. (If that’s where you have been buying your music, you may stop reading now.)
So why are the (((Rhythm Dogs))) offering our new album “The Dogfather” on CD only (leaving aside for the moment the 200-gram audiophile vinyl offering that is surely on its way)?
First, streaming services such as Apple, Spotify, and Tidal offer absolutely insultingly low payments to artists - low even by (((Rhythm Dogs))) standards.
Second, so far we can’t figure out how to offer our music digitally.
Third - and most importantly - the physical CD offers unparalleled audio as well as some hip artwork and the all-important names of the artists and songs. For example, here is the back cover, depicting guest artists Jennifer Batten (Michael Jackson, Jeff Beck) and Scientist (Bob Marley, Scratch Perry) looming over the six of us.
